Ever wanted to mute a group chat on WhatsApp? Well now you have the answer for your perfectly reasonable idiosyncrasies.
Starting now, you can mute a WhatsApp Android group chat for one century. As per the update, version 2.11.230 for Android, the app has extended ‘mute’ time for group conversation. The latest option is 100 years, which is only a little more anti-social than the 1 year option.
All jokes aside, this seems like a handy security feature. It should reduce instances of harassment where strangers could invite you to a group chat by adding your number. By muting this group for 100 years, you are effectively blocking them en masse, which is better than having to individually block these unwanted contacts.
Users will now also be able to completely deactivate group notifications, which is a godsend. Earlier one could only mute a group, which still showed you the notification but without any sound alert. But now replacing the ‘muted’ group function is the new ‘Show Notification’ feature, which allows users to completely turn off all alerts from group chats.
The update has a new camera icon as well as a changed voice-message icon. The camera button is a one-click shortcut for your default camera. It’s quicker than having to choose the attachment icons.
It must be noted that this is not an official update yet and can be downloaded via the official site, but not through the Play Store yet. WhatsApp routinely releases new features in this fashion, before finalising the update. So we could see some edits to the new functionality.
