Apple Testing Inductive, Solar and Motion Charging With its SmartWatch

 

Battery life for wearables is a huge concern, and the reason why is continued adoption: No end user is eager for the chance to have to remember to charge yet another device, of course, and the problem is made worse when, in forgetting to charge a wearable even once, they notice no overall impact to their lives. The double challenge then is to build a smartwatch that becomes integral to a user’s general routine, such that they’ll actively remember to charge it with the same frequency as their phone, and also to make it so that charging is a fairly infrequent requirement.

Apple is now pushing himself hard to do comeback in the market. It is heard that it is currently working on a smartwatch that won’t need any plugin to get charge. Solar charging is what it has for us.

Apple’s highly anticipated smart watch, presumably dubbed the “iWatch,” could feature some new charging options as the company is rumored to be exploring a number of possible technologies, including using magnetic induction and solar power.

Battery power has always been a bottleneck for all the gadgets and apple is looking serious on that note. Long battery life can actually make iwatch (apple smart watch) worth purchasing.

One of the new charging methods, uses the magnetic-induction technique, allowing users to charge their batteries wirelessly. Some of Nokia’s smartphones have a similar feature, which helps produce a magnetic field that creates voltage to power the phone when it is placed on a charging plate.

Apple reportedly posted a job listing on its website last year seeking engineers with experience in the solar power industry to work on mobile devices.

Despite being traditional, the battery within the iWatch is rumored to have a thin, curved design that could easily suit a flexible solar panel layer, the Times reported.

In addition, Apple is also said to be working on another charging method that leverages on movement — a technique, which, according to the report, is already featured in some modern watches. In 2009, Applefiled for a patent that explained how a person’s swinging arm, while walking, could activate a tiny charging station to generate and supply power to the device.

In July, Apple was awarded a patent for a flexible battery shape that could fit in future products such as a smart watch. According to the company, the design allowed “the battery to be shaped to fit a form factor of the electronic device.”

According to some media reports last month, battery life has been one of the main reasons for Apple to delay the release of the iWatch. The reports said that early prototypes of the iWatch only saw a battery life of two to three days, leading Apple to look into other alternative technologies for the device’s screen to help extend battery life between charges.

Inductive charging came in a wave of smartphones last year, including Google’s Nexus 4 and Nokia’s Lumia 920 range, although we don’t often see it in anything smaller than a phone (or camera) form-factor. Apple, however, is looking into cramming the same technology into its iWatch, or whatever it eventually calls its debut wearable.

The electromagnetic fields are generated from a charging base, which are then picked up by metal coils and transformed into for-real electricity that charges your device. The Cupertino company is experimenting with other new charging methods too, although these are apparently years away from consumer products. Sources close to the matter also mentioned the inclusion of a solar layer beneath the device’s display, while the company has also looked into kinetically charging its wearables — something that is already used in many modern (non-smart) timepieces.

It seems that apple is all set to surprise its customers with the best smart watch launch in the market covering all possible aspects that can be combined with such a small device on wrist.

Lets see what apple has for us this year. Apple says to launch the smart watch by the end of march 2015 but no one confirms the date till now. Lets hope that apple comes up with a good product for its eagerly waiting customers.
