Reports of New York Times and 9to5Mac says apple is planning hard to push its area into health-tracking and medical devices. To make this possible apple is gonna use the so called iWatch, an wearable wrist-computer which is expected to launch later this year.

According to the New York Times report, which says high-level Apple executives have met with the FDA to talk about bringing medical devices and apps to market. Nick Bilton, who co-bylined the NYT report, was the first person to break the news that Apple was working on the iWatch.

Then there’s the 9to5Mac report from Mark Gurman, the best Apple reporter in the world. Gurman says Apple’s next version of iOS, the operating system for iPhones and iPads, will have a new app called “Healthbook” that will be used to monitor stuff like calories burned, steps taken, and weight lost.

The health monitoring app called “Healthbook” will come pre-installed on iOS 8, which, if true, would be a huge blow to third-party apps including those made by Fitbit, Nike, Runkeeper and Withings just to name a few. It would track and report steps, calories burned, distance walked and more, including weight fluctuations, and blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate and more.

9to5Mac’s report details functionality of the proposed “Healthbook” app, which, as its name suggests, takes a lot of cues from Passbook. It’ll offer swipeable cards for each vital stat it tracks, letting users page through their medical and health information. The report cautions that this functionality could be taken out prior to the final release of iOS 8: With the FDA’s involvement, one concern might be getting the necessary approvals to market the software as a potential medical aid.

It’s sounding more and more like Apple’s iWatch is going to be a breakthrough product. Right now, smart watches are pretty dull with limited features and clunky designs. Many have compared the current state of smart watches to what smartphones looked like before the iPhone launched.
