Here, the processor’s Kepler GPU promises to bring laptop-class computing and gaming power to mobile devices, without sacrificing battery life in the process.
The chipset maker NVIDIA officially announced Tegra K1 at CES 2014, which features the first 192-core GPU based on the Kepler architecture which was originally designed for desktops and notebooks and later added to supercomputers.
The 192 CUDA-core Tegra K1, demonstrated onstage on Android, is designed not only for smartphones and tablets, but for 4K televisions, consoles, and cars, as well.
Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, promising outsized computing power for so-called future “superphones,” took the stage at CES to unveil the company’s latest mobile processor for Android.
NVIDIA in its CES press conference with tidings of its next-generation mobile processor which will begin gracing devices in 2014. As you can imagine, NVIDIA is bringing its graphics chops to the new DirectX 11-powered GPU, and it packs a serious punch — so much so, in fact, that it will come with support for Unreal Engine 4 and OpenGL 4.4.
The processor has the ability to create realistic environments, particle effects, and cars “that Justin Bieber would like.” Huang was so proud of the processor’s technical prowess, he said that it was practically “made by aliens” — explaining the puzzling crop circle that was discovered in a field of barley late last month.
The Tegra K1 A15 variant will max out at 2.3GHz, while the Denver version will max out at 2.5GHz. The former is expected to hit devices in the first half of this year, while the latter will hit in the second half. Both versions of the K1 have already been certified by AT&T and Vodafone (among other carriers). We also learned that although LTE support doesn’t come natively on the chipset, it’ll still be available thanks to an external chip that will be part of the K1 setup.
According to an Nvidia whitepaper (PDF), it can use half the power for the same CPU performance, or get 40 percent more performance for the same power. The second variant is a long-awaited custom 64-bit dual-core “Denver” ARM CPU, the first CPU Nvidia has ever developed. Though “Project Denver” was teased back at CES 2011, the design was not expected this early. Now, the processor’s release puts Nvidia in the same camp as Intel.

The result seems to be a minimum 25 percent lead over the current generation of flagship chips, including Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 and Apple’s 64-bit A7, as measured with 3DMark.
disclaimer : Firstly, these scores are based on a Lenovo Thinkvision 28Android all-in-one (with a lovely 4K panel), which Tom’s Hardware was led to believe (but not officially told) contains a K1. Secondly, assuming this is a K1, it’s definitely not the 64-bit version; it’s not running at NVIDIA’s claimed max clock speed of 2.3GHz, and it’s almost certainly not using market-ready drivers — all of which suggests that 2014’s crop of Tegra K1-powered tablets could be even more powerful than what we’re seeing right now.
It’s hard to say whether or not this will help NVIDIA gain some lost ground on Qualcomm, but only time will tell.
